Email Notification of New Private Messages set to yes by default ?

I propose that "Email Notification of New Private Messages:" should be set to yes by default upon signup. ( just like Talkarcade.com )

I wonder what other members think ?

    Hi,

I think every time you sign up on a forum, you should go thru the setting options for your account, after all works like you need it.
Anyway, let’s see what other members think about.

    Regards

    Cool
Since I come here quite often its no biggie to me but like for TA where I just hit it up every so often its nice to be notified when I get a PM via email. But then again there are people out there who dont like to get a lot of email so having this on by default IMO is maybe not the best idea since any user can just go turn it on in their settings. But if enough of you guys ask then you shall receive (if its possible)

The reason is a bit touchy......

It all has to do with people feeling as though it is spam, you would think they would want one!?! Accordin to the "new" rules a person has to OPT in, therefore for me to abide, I need to set to NO.....you opt in.

This is for everything from PM to emails from the forum.

I get a lot of emails by default from different sites and forums. I honestly prefer it that way because there are a lot of forums sites etc online that interests me and it is hard to keep up with them all at this point. I am no lawyer nor did I play one on TV but I think what you have to do is provide a way for the user to opt in or out on signup and there after so regardless of where your default is set the user gets the final say.

TBH from what I have seen the great thing about social sites, forums etc is that they bring your inteests in focus fast and easy for you. So that you can get a birds eye view of what you want to know about without tweaking a ton of features because 70 - 80% of users dont want or need more stuff to manage IMHO.

I agree that I need the emails to help keep me up to date and knowing where my attention is needed. But RickyG is right about having to keep things like that set up to be purposely opt it only, something you have to make a choice to do, and prove it by manually selecting it. He could get into a huge amount of trouble over it. When I helped code the newsletter for Free Arcade Script, I made sure it was not even listed in the sign up form, you have to go into your profile and opt in on purpose.

I'd recommend to set it to yes to send the email. I don't check these forums every day, but if someone were to PM me I'd see it in my email and would end up responding more quickly.

I agree, I always want notifications. I can't go visit every forum every day and if I get a message, I want to know about it. It's annoying to have to put that setting on for EVERY forum you join, so when it's set to default like it was here for me, I smile
